When friends or family stop by my house, it never fails, someone always asks how I keep my home clean and organized when I’m a busy working woman with more on her plate than hours in the day.
I’m not going to kid you and say it’s always easy, or that I always want to do everything on this list. I’m not a robot, and some days I slip up and ‘forget’ to make the bed.
What I quickly realize is how much these tasks help me, not only with the cleanliness of my home but my peace of mind as well.
I’ve always been a firm believer that the world is chaotic enough. Therefore, I want my home to be a calm and peaceful place.
Why replicate the chaos of the outside world, inside your home?
So, even when I’m tired and don’t want to pick up and put something away, I do so to live up to the standard I’ve created; the standard that makes my life feel less chaotic.

The 10 Daily Tasks That Will Keep Your Home Clean and Organized
1. Put Coats Away
When you come home, go directly to the closet or nearest hook and hang up your coat. Leaving it on the back of a chair, the banister, or worse the floor makes for a messy looking house.
2. Wipe Down Kitchen and Bathroom Counters
Nothing’s worse than seeing dirty countertops or bathroom vanity. A quick wipe with a disposable sanitizing cloth is all you need to do before you leave the house. Keep a container of wipes in every bathroom so they’re readily available to you.

3. Don’t Leave Shoes at the Front Door
Have a way for your family to put shoes away when they come in. A basket, shoe organizer or rack can help create a sense of order and leave your mud room or front door looking more inviting.
4. Don’t Leave Dishes on the Counter or in the Sink
Don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink. Instead, make sure the dishwasher is emptied each morning, so it’s available to put dishes into it.
If you have a dish rack, put clean dishes away. The kitchen will appear cleaner and will be ready to prepare your next meal.

5. Hang Bath Towels after Use
Install hooks or rods in your bathroom to accommodate the number of towels that are used by your family. My bathroom has two hooks, in different locations. To make it easy for family members to identify, consider using a hook with a picture frame. Frame each person’s name to make it easy for each family to know which hook is theirs.

6. Close The Bedroom Door
My daughter wasn’t the neatest person growing up. We had a rule in my house – I didn’t want to see, smell or have it escape the confines of her room. Sometimes if your kids are messy, the best thing you can do is to have them close the bedroom door.
7. Don’t Forget To Empty the Trash
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to a friend’s home, used their bathroom, which was relatively clean, only to find trash overflowing. Nothing will make a space look dirty than an overflowing trash can. Assign it to a member of the house, and have them empty the trash a few times a week. It’s a great job to give to one of the smaller children in the home.

9. Eat At The Table
Having owned my cleaning company, I’ve cleaned hundreds of homes. The number one way that people’s homes look dirty is when they eat anywhere besides the kitchen or dining room.
When you allow the family to eat in the family room what tends to happen? Spills, that’s what, and spills make the house look dirty. Not to mention the leftover dishes and cups that get left behind by the people who don’t feel like bringing them back to the kitchen and loading them in the dishwasher.
My daughter had a baby a couple of weeks ago. I told her, “Carrie, if you want to keep your home looking clean, never allow Lucas to eat anywhere except at the table.”
10. Have It Smell Good
When you walk into a house, and it smells nice, you automatically think it’s clean or cleaner than it might be.
I love to use aromatherapy in my home to keep it smelling great! I regularly diffuse my favorite scents, depending on my mood. Sometimes it’s something bright and fresh like a citrus blend and other times it’s more relaxing, like when I go to sleep at night and diffuse lavender.
Essential oils can be mixed and combined to find your perfect aroma without all the chemicals associated with many candles, sprays, and plugins.
Doing these small but very simple tasks each day, ensures you’re home is looking and smelling great.
